Donauwörth is a colorful city in Bavaria, at the junction of the Donau (Danube) and Wörnitz rivers. It is located about 28 mi (46km) north of Augsburg.
With a population of less than 20,000, the city is centrally located for touring the nearby cities and villages along the scenic Romantic Road.
The Romantic Road passes along Donauwörth's beautiful main street - the Reichsstraße - lined with magnificent historic structures and shown in both photographs.
The town hall is impressive - with a history almost 800 years old. Visit Liebfrauenmünster (Church of Our Holy Lady), built in the 13th century (having replaced an 11th century church) and restored several times over the centuries.
The Liebfrauenmünster and its tower can be seen in the photograph at left. On the far right of the photograph is the perfectly-reconstructed 14th century Tanzhaus - or Dance Hall - of old Donauwörth. Visit the town's archaeological museum on the second floor.
Donauwörth was one of the city-states of the Holy Roman Empire and a former Benedictine abbey still exists in the city. Besides history, Donauwörth also offers plenty of recreation and leisure activities, including hiking, fishing, and cycling.
